What drew you to College Possible and why did you apply?
I came back for a second year because I loved getting to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making College Possible happen last year as a High School Program VISTA. I really loved the chances I had to meet students at events while I was in that role, and I was excited to be a part of their day-to-day lives a little more.
What are the highlights of your position?
Getting to see my students learn more about themselves, and learn more about the things that they can do. A couple of them said they didn’t think they could go to college, and watching how excited they were and how proud they were when they got their first college acceptance – or heard back from a school they didn’t expect to get in to – has been really exciting and beautiful.
What has been a favorite memory from your service with College Possible?
It’s hard to distill it down to just one memory. One of my favorite memories for sure is when one of my students got accepted to Cornell. She’d been really excited about other acceptances, but this is one that had been her dream for a long time. So getting to see all the hard work that she put in to working on her SATs, doing well in school, committing to extracurricular activities, and balancing her family obligations come together has been really exciting.
What would you say to someone considering serving with College Possible?
It is a lot of work, but it’s really rewarding. Definitely apply, and be really thoughtful about what you’re willing to do for students and how much time you’re willing to put in.
